Year 2

Year 2

Welcome to Year 2.

All of our English and Reading work links to our engaging class texts, which I’m sure some of you will be familiar with. Some of the texts we enjoy in Year 2 include: The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, The Mousehole Cat and The Queen’s Hat. You will learn how to write creative and lively narratives through your use of adjectives and description as well as looking at different conjunctions to extend your sentences.

Maths in Year 2 is very hands on and practical and I’m sure you will love learning in this way. You will learn how to add and subtract two 2-digit numbers in different ways and apply this to problem solving and reasoning questions. You will also begin learning your 2, 5 and 10-times table, so you can recall these facts by heart. In maths, you will also look at identifying and describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes as well as telling the time to the quarter hour.

During the Autumn term you will learn about a number of significant people from the past and consider the impact they have had on our lives today in the topic ‘Movers and Shakers’.

In the Spring term, you will enjoy the topic ‘Coastline’ where you will learn about the countries in the United Kingdom and begin to locate familiar coastlines within these.

Finally, in the Summer term you will be looking at the monarchy within our topic ‘Magnificent Monarchs’. We spend time looking at the monarchs who changed England, the portraits they had done and the places that they live in.
