Year 4
We had a fantastic day at school when Professor Black came to visit, bringing our Ancient Egypt topic to life in a fun and engaging way. Year 4 were fully immersed in the experience and loved learning about daily life along the River Nile, exploring how it supported farming, transport and settlement.
Pupils were particularly fascinated by the discovery of hieroglyphics, learning how Ancient Egyptians communicated through symbols and even having a go at writing some of their own messages. They were also intrigued by the importance of canopic jars, understanding how these were used during the mummification process and what they reveal about Egyptian beliefs in the afterlife.
The workshop was highly interactive, allowing pupils to handle artefacts, ask questions and deepen their understanding through hands-on activities. It was a memorable day that sparked curiosity, enthusiasm and a real excitement for learning more about Ancient Egypt.
Year 5
We had an exciting and interactive Ancient Greece workshop led by a specialist historian. Throughout the day, the children stepped back in time to discover what life was like in Ancient Greece and learn about its fascinating myths and legends.
The children took part in battle role-play activities, helping them to understand how Greek soldiers fought and worked together. They were amazed to learn about some of the differences between life in Ancient Greece and life today, including the fact that Greek children were sometimes allowed to drink watered-down wine.
The workshop also explored Greek mythology. Pupils enjoyed hearing the story of Medusa and learnt that, in some versions of the myth, her own powers contributed to her downfall before she was sent to live on Mount Olympus with Zeus and the other gods.
It was a memorable day filled with hands-on learning, drama and storytelling, which brought our history topic to life and inspired the children to find out even more about the Ancient Greeks.
